Success Story – From Silence to Strength
How Educational Games Are Changing Lives in Imo State
As part of the second phase of the Game Changers: Tackling Harmful Practices in Nigeria Using Educational Games for Girls project, Chidinma
and dozens of other girls were introduced to a fun, interactive game and mobile app that didn’t just entertain but also educated. Through storytelling, role-playing, and quizzes, the girls began to understand the harmful effects of FGM and child marriage in a way that was engaging and culturally sensitive.
Chidinma’s transformation didn’t stop there. Inspired by what she learned, she volunteered to become a peer educator. She and other peers started engaging in school outreaches. Through the training she received, she gained the confidence to speak up—not only among her peers but also in community meetings where she now champions the rights of girls and advocates for an end to harmful traditional practices.
This success is one of many from this reporting period, where the project recorded significant milestones. The participatory approach used in delivering the educational content created safe spaces for dialogue among schoolgirls, parents, and community leaders. Peer educators like Chidinma are now leading ongoing conversations within their schools and communities, sustaining the impact beyond the initial sessions.
Despite challenges such as limited digital access and initial resistance from some community leaders, the project team remained adaptive and resilient. By introducing offline versions of the games and engaging trusted local influencers with culturally appropriate messaging, the project overcame these barriers and deepened community trust and participation.
The impact of the Game Changers project goes beyond knowledge. It is shifting mindsets, fostering leadership among young girls, and igniting
collective responsibility to end harmful practices. With strong partnerships across schools, local NGOs, and community leaders, the project continues to grow.
Chidinma’s story is just the beginning. As the project looks to scale, it carries with it a simple but powerful lesson: when girls are given the tools to learn and the freedom to lead, they become unstoppable agents of change.
